Book 5 - The Law Of Nature

by Dee Price

Chakotay gently set the shuttle down near a canyon Kathryn had seen from the air and wanted to view from a closer perspective. A town was close by but rather than park there and walk back, Chakotay chose to land near this masterpiece of nature.

They were on their way back to Dorvan V, after visiting one of Chakotay's former Maquis friends, when Kathryn spotted the canyon and asked Chakotay to land.

After opening the hatch both stepped out and walked toward the edge. Kathryn shaded her eyes from the setting sun and murmured, "It's so beautiful."

It was dusk and the setting sun cast a myriad of shadows on the wall of the canyon, which continued to change as the sun sank lower and lower. They decided to sit and watch the sunset. After Chakotay sat with his back to a tree, Kathryn settled between his legs and leaned back into his chest as he encircled her with his arms.

Kathryn sighed. "Look at that sunset, honey. I missed seeing this when on missions."

"Missions?" he laughed. "You were on one mission and got us lost."

She laughed as she looked back at him. "You forget I was on several missions as a Science Officer before getting Voyager."

"Oh," he grinned. "I thought you were referring to recent times."

Kathryn snuggled back into his arms and was silent for a few minutes. Her silence made Chakotay ask, "You miss Earth don't you?"

"Of course I do, sweetheart, but not in the way you think. I'm so happy being with you and being your wife that I don't care where we are as long as you are there. I just can't believe how life with you and loving you makes me feel so happy and content!"

Suddenly she leaned forward and looked at him. "And - I love it on Dorvan V; I'm very content there. It is our home now."

"Well at least until Dan let's us know you will be safe," Chakotay said.

Speaking of Dan I wonder how he, Jason and Brad are? I admit I miss them."

"I do too," responded Chakotay, "but I'm willing to bet their lives are a lot quieter without us around."

"Right - no 'boom' in their lives," she laughed. "You know, honey, we should give them a call. We're not where we said we'd be, so maybe it would be all right."

Chakotay knew by the tone in her voice it really wasn't a question, and he missed them too. "Well I know a man in the nearby town who happens to have a secure console in the back room of his store," he said as he stood and helped Kathryn.

"Now why doesn't that surprise me," she chuckled. "I don't suppose he has something to do with the old Maquis days."

He just grinned as he took hold of her hand and they stepped into their shuttle and headed for the town.

Jason sighed and reaching his arms straight above his head stretched mightily, causing a few pops in his spine, then grimaced and slapping his arms down on his desk gave a loud groan and as he dropped his head on his forearms said, "I am so bored!"

Hearing a laugh from the door he turned his head to see who it was, his face already turning a slight shade of pink in embarrassment at being heard. Seeing it was Brad, he chuckled.

"So," said Brad as he entered the office. "What's so boring? Your life or your job?"

Jason shook his head as he sat up. "It is just so unexciting now. Ever since Kathryn and Chakotay left, it's so . . . so . . ."

"Boring," ended Brad and both men erupted into laughter. Brad dropped down in the chair opposite Jason and propping his feet up on the edge of the desk said, "I sure have to agree with you there. No more booms, exploding windows or lawsuits. It's been very quiet and I don't even think we've had a decent robbery lately." Again both men grinned.

"I wonder how they are," mused Jason. "Maybe they are blowing up villages or something."

Brad grinned. "Or maybe they are just disrupting everyone's peace and quiet."

"I sure miss them though," said Jason turning serious. "They are good people. Too bad those things happened that caused them to move away from Earth."

"Agreed," yawned Brad. "But they sure brought Starfleet to their knees and changed things for the better. However, I do miss that excitement!" Throwing his hands up in the air he mouthed 'boom!'

Both men again started laughing loudly, albeit in an uncomfortable sort of way, and then a voice from the door said, "What's so funny or is it a private joke?"

Both men automatically sprang to their feet as Captain Dan Raymond walked in. Although Brad was also a Captain he just considered Dan his superior.

"It's nothing sir," said Brad. "We were just discussing how we miss Kathryn and Chakotay and all that excitement." Jason then indicated for Dan to sit down and he and Brad did the same.

Dan grinned. "I miss them, too and they did stir the pot for awhile, didn't they?"

"Stir the pot is putting it mildly, Captain," retorted Brad.

Just then Jason's console beeped, indicating an incoming message. He lazily reached out and punched the button and then abruptly jerked upright.

"Kathryn!" he exclaimed.

Brad jumped to his feet and started moving around the desk. "There's only one Kathryn I know," he said as he stepped behind Jason.

"Good morning you two," said a smiling Kathryn Janeway. "At least if I remember correctly it is morning there."

"Oh my gosh," gushed Jason as he smiled broadly. "We were just talking about you two!"

"Oh, so that's why my ears are burning," she replied with a giggle.

Both Jason and Brad laughed and then Jason yelled "Hey!" as Raymond grabbed the console and swung it to face him.

"Good morning," he said.

"Dan! You are there with those two scalawags!"

"Yes, sometimes I have to lower my standards and hobnob with the lower peons," he replied with a laugh.

"Well it's good to see you as well as Jason and Brad. How are you – still spoken for?" she asked with an impish smile.

"Totally and completely," he replied as Jason and Brad moved around the desk to now face Kathryn. Then he frowned and said, "Should you be on this line?"

Kathryn, sensing his concern and topic, replied, "Well we aren't where we said we'd be and the gentleman that is allowing us to use his console has initiated a scrambler. Is that alright?"

"Well you are still coming in to this building. Just a moment," and he reached down to a hidden button on the side on the side of the console and punched it. Looking up he watched as the screen blipped and then became steady. Then he smiled. "We are scrambled on this end also and I hope not too late. At least we can talk a bit more freely but not totally. How are you and Chakotay?"

Kathryn looked to the side and said, "We are both fine and deliriously happy. Chakotay is kibitzing on everything that is being said," she added with a laugh.

"Oh so that's the odd noise we heard in the background," laughed Jason.

Chakotay slid in beside Kathryn and smiled. "If I were there Lt Armstrong, I would knock you on your keister!"

Everyone laughed and Jason asked, "Is that the same as being 'cold cocked"?"

"Almost worse," replied Chakotay with a big smile.

"Are you getting your physical therapy there, Chakotay?" asked Dan.

"Some, but not this weekend, as we are on the move."

"Well don't let it get too far behind. Although if you came back for treatment we would get to see you," he said with somewhat of a smile.

Kathryn interrupted this and in a serious tone said, "We know we can't do that, but just wanted to call and say hello and see how you all were. We miss you three wonderful friends."

"Thank you Kathryn," echoed Brad and Jason. "We miss you too," they again said in unison and then broke out in laughter.

"I can't believe those two are such astute lawyers," grumbled Dan as he looked at them, and then broke into a big smile. "However, they relieve the tension around here with their good-natured banter."

"Things still tense, Dan?" asked Chakotay.

"Yeah but things are still way too boring without you guys," Jason quickly interrupted before Dan could reply.

"No Janeway and Chakotay to protect?" laughed Kathryn.

"Getting back to your question, Chakotay, it's still not safe if that's what you are wondering," Dan replied.

Both Kathryn and Chakotay frowned on that. "It's been almost two years since that business! Still not good?" said Chakotay.

Dan then held his index finger to his lips and as he reached for a Padd looked at Jason and Brad and twirled the finger in the air, indicating for them to keep chatting.

Jason chuckled and said, "Oh well, you know there is always someone getting themselves into trouble so it keeps us busy and out of trouble."

"There's an occasional robbery or somebody getting mugged, but that isn't any fun," chimed in Brad with a grin, then again mimed no 'boom.'

Both Kathryn and Chakotay chuckled and then Dan held his Padd up to the screen, while Jason stated some more inane banter. The Padd read: 'Four more. Your name was within the documents and a recent date.'

Kathryn looked surprised, which quickly became shock as she read and leaned back as Chakotay responded to Jason's question about what they were doing. "Oh Kathryn is mucking around in the dirt but actually has quite a nice garden started."

Dan said, "Well just don't let anything happen to her. Keep her locked in the house, especially with Halloween coming around and kids on a witch hunt."

Kathryn immediately sensed the whole sentence was keyed on the last three words and nodded and then said, "After all this time, plus practice in the Delta Quadrant at New Earth, you'd think I'd know how to grow a garden, but I guess it takes time, doesn't it?"

"Yeah," replied Dan. "Some things need to be dug deeper to get the results you want."

"Oh dear. I guess I still have a lot to learn then."

"Afraid so, Kathryn," chimed in Jason. "So you best stay put, wherever put is," and he chuckled.

"We shall," she replied. Well we best go. We don't want to keep you busy fellows from saving the world."

"Well things are much better and slowing down – at least they were," said Brad with a smile.

"I hope you all will be safe. Take care, all three of you," smiled Kathryn.

"We will and you too," said Brad.

"Miss you guys," added Jason.

Dan smiled, nodded his head and said, "Be careful and check in when you can. Oh – this is my new number," he said as he held up the Padd. Kathryn and Chakotay nodded and smiled, Kathryn waved and the screen went black.

All three men sat quietly for a moment and then spent a few minutes reminiscing on the various adventures Kathryn and Chakotay had endured upon their return from the Delta Quadrant. That exhausted, they became quiet. Dan suddenly looked at them but didn't say anything.

Finally Jason, sensing something was up, asked, "You are very serious, Captain. Is something wrong – are you worried about Kathryn and Chakotay?"

"No not that," he said with a small smile. "I am concerned about their welfare, but I have something - well it's just possible I may end your boredom," he said quietly, "And yet I don't know whether you want this assignment. It's sort of a 'lose-lose' situation."

"Now that you have our undivided attention, you might as well give the specifics," chuckled Jason.

Dan nodded, was quiet a moment and then started with, "The Romulans have a Starfleet Lt captive and want to execute him for spying . . ."

"What!" exploded both Jason and Brad. "I've never heard about that," added Brad.

"Well it has been kept quiet and we have been in diplomatic negotiations with them for the past three months."

"That long? Was he spying?" asked Jason in a quiet voice.

"No, apparently not – well at least according to him. Okay, the full story is that Captain Allen was on patrol in the ship Jasper and had stopped at a seemingly uninhabited old Earth Outpost to investigate some strange readings from their sensors. A force of six beamed down and when they saw Romulans hurried to the beam up spot and went back to the ship.

"All, that is, except for Lt. Charles Tucker. He says he separated from the group for an emergency visit regarding 'Mother Nature' and when he came walking out of the bush walked right into two Romulan guards with their Phasers pointed at him.

"Of course they immediately took him captive. In the meantime Captain Allen had hailed this planet and said a group had been beamed down but when a force of Romulans were spotted, realized the planet was not unoccupied as originally thought and came back to the ship, but that one Lt was missing.

"Upon being informed Tucker was now a captive and charged with spying the Captain protested vehemently, but to no avail and after three days of trying to obtain his release, was forced to leave. They reported the incident to Starfleet immediately and we have been in contact with the High Council ever since."

"So where do we fit in?" asked Jason.

"Well we have finally gotten an agreement that he will be given a trial . . ."

"Where the verdict is already decided before the trial starts," interjected Brad.

"Right, that's why I call it a 'lose-lose' situation. Anyway, they have agreed to Starfleet Counsel as his representative in the trial and I was considering you two, but I don't know."

"You mean the Romulans will allow the trial here on Earth?" exclaimed Jason. "That's virtually unheard of."

"It is unheard of Jason, because the trial will be on either Remus or Romulus," replied Dan.

"Which is even stranger because I didn't know the Romulans allowed humans on their planet," said Brad.

"Well Commander Spock was there once while James T. Kirk was on a covert mission, and Picard and Data also when on a covert assignment, but I don't think anyone, to my knowledge anyway, has publicly visited or been invited. They don't like visitors and are very protective of the Empire."

"Well Spock is Vulcan and Romulans are an offshoot of Vulcans so I can understand his being there," said Brad.

"And the rest were there covertly which is also understandable considering the time they were there, although if the Romulans ever find out it wouldn't be so nice. So we are sort of breaking ground I guess," added Jason.

"That makes it doubly important we don't offend their laws. It's taken a long time for us to even get an agreement of a trial. They have finally agreed to two counsels, one director and one observer," said Dan.

Both men looked at him and then Jason grinned and said, "Why do I have the feeling you are the director?"

Dan grinned. "And only because I just got appointed by Admiral Dodge who was virtually forced to be the observer. The Romulans expressly requested the Chief Executive Officer of Starfleet to attend and that is the Admiral. I guess he figured if he had to suffer then I must too," he said with a laugh. He then looked at Brad and Jason and added, "Look I really haven't offered you two the assignment and if you aren't interested I can understand. There's not much you can do, as it is Tucker's word against the two guards."

Jason looked at Brad. "Did I hear either of us say no?"

"Not unless I've gone deaf," responded Brad who then looked at Dan. "Sir you are saying defending him is virtually a loss, but then look at what lawyers do. They hunt and probe and find answers just like detectives and by digging deep enough sometimes even a 'lose-lose' case is won when the truth is finally found."

Dan laughed. "A.k.a. Kathryn and Chakotay's trial, eh Captain?" All three men laughed.

"Well if you offer it I for one would like to give it a try, Captain," said Jason. "I would hate to see one of our own lose to the Romulans without our at least trying. They are, from what I understand anyway, a very passionate, highly honorable and yet aggressive race."

"With a little bit of devious mixed in," added Brad. "But I'm in, too, sir." Then looking at Jason mused, "I wonder what Romulus is like?" Looking at Dan he asked, "Is it hot like Vulcan?"

"It is apparently a comfortable planet," said Dan, "But remember my friends, it still might be held on Remus. I also have to warn you, you will be under strict guidelines . . . not by Starfleet, but by the Romulans. Their guidelines for this trial leave little operating room. I really don't know what you can do to tell you the truth based on the agreement."

"Is it that bad, sir?" asked Jason.

"Let's put it this way. There are about 20 'do not's' as opposed to three 'maybes' and one 'allowed'."

Jason and Brad both broke out into large grins and Jason said, "Oooh, a challenge!"

"Look it's taken us this long to get that much, so don't knock it. Usually the defendant stands up and gives his Romulan Right of Statement on his guilt or innocence and that's it," said Dan.

"Like I said a challenge!" said a grinning Jason.

Dan stood and laughed as he headed for the door and said, "So you two want to represent Lt Tucker, I gather?"

"Yes sir," they chorused.

Dan shook his head. "I feel sorry for the Romulans. I'll get back to you on what to pack and when we leave," and he walked out.

Brad and Jason immediately slapped hands and then leaning back both suddenly frowned.

"I wonder what we've gotten ourselves into," muttered Jason.

"Lot's of that missing excitement I think," answered Brad with a sudden deep frown.

As Kathryn and Chakotay exited the store, Chakotay nodded to the gentleman behind the counter. The man winked as he nodded back at him.

As they stepped back out into the brilliant sunshine, Kathryn said, "Oh that was so good to talk to them! I feel exhilarated at seeing them and hearing Jason and Brad laugh."

"It was nice to see them again," Chakotay responded.

"And Dan is so nice and such a handsome man . . ."

"There you go again, Kathryn, admiring and lusting after the man!"

"I am not lusting after him!" said Kathryn vehemently. "But he is such a hunk," she giggled, with a smirk."

"You are making me very jealous," Chakotay said while feigning an injured expression.

Kathryn laughed. "Jealous? Honey you don't have a jealous bone in your body!"

"You'd be surprised," he smiled, then added, "No I'm not really jealous but only because he is an affirmed bachelor!"

"Too bad," Kathryn mused and then burst out laughing as Chakotay stopped dead in his tracks and put his hands on his hips.

Finally Chakotay laughed and reaching the shuttle, he said as he opened the hatch, "I have to admit he is a very handsome man, but . . ."

"No buts sweetheart," Kathryn said as she turned and put her arms around his neck after he closed the hatch. "I love you, you are stuck with me for life and you know it."

Chakotay grinned, kissed her and then as he turned for the pilot's seat said, "I know, but it's nice to tease you," then automatically ducked as he expected Kathryn to punch his shoulder.

Instead she just kissed him on the cheek, said, "I know. It's fun when neither of us have anything to worry about. Now, pilot, or whatever you call yourself when sitting in that chair get us home, pronto!"

"Aye Captain," and the shuttle's motor started and they soon soared into the air.

Back on Earth, it was three days later the entourage of Admiral Dodge, Captain Dan Raymond, Captain Brad Jordan and Lt Jason Armstrong beamed on board the Starship Enterprise. The Romulans expected 'only the best' from the Earthlings, and that included not only Dodge as the head of Starfleet, but transportation to the Romulan Star Empire by the gem of Starfleet, the Starship Enterprise. It was obvious to the four men that the Romulans were going to make this 'trial' a showcase with lots of publicity.

Both Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Commander Riker greeted them in the Transporter Room and Picard immediately took Admiral Dodge to his quarters and to have a chat. Riker told Dan, Brad and Jason he would take them to their quarters, but before leaving told the men they may go anywhere on the ship and if they wanted a tour he would handle it himself.

All three quickly agreed to a tour, the sooner the better, they said. Commander Riker smiled and said, "Why not right now?" and after dumping their bags in their rooms, off they went. All three men were in awe, especially Jason who had never been on a Starship before. Later in the Mess Hall they couldn't stop talking about what they had seen, nor the fact they were on the Enterprise.

* * * *

During the trip to Romulus, Jason and Brad, along with Dan, spent a great deal of time together going over and discussing the stringent rules the Romulans had lain down for conduct in the trial.

"Geez," mused Jason at one time, "I wonder if they allow us to take a deep breath."

"Don't count on it," mumbled Brad as he frowned at the 'rules'.

"Let's see if I got this right, Dan," said Jason. "We can't object to any of the prosecutor's line of questioning, presentations or summation. We can't speak to the High Council unless directed by said High mucky muck and we can't question any Romulan witnesses the prosecutor may call."

Dan nodded. "Like I said, gentlemen; it's basically a 'lose-lose' situation. It is their way and we are on their turf. My only hope is that somehow you can persuade the council to not vote for execution. Good grief, all the man did was to go behind a tree!"

"Well when we get there we can at least question Tucker and get his story," mused Brad.

Solemnly Dan shook his head. "Just before we left the Romulans specified that we will have no contact with 'the spy' before the trial commences. Admiral Dodge yelled loud and long but so far the Romulans haven't given in on that point."

Both Jason and Brad stared at Dan with incredulous looks of shock and disbelief on their faces. Both were equally stunned into silence.

Finally Jason stuttered, "That's insane! I won't set foot on the planet until we can see our client!"

"Me either," echoed Brad.

"So we go all the way to Romulus and you two won't defend Tucker?" asked Dan.

"No I'm not saying that Dan," said Jason. "We just refuse to leave the Enterprise until we can talk to Tucker before the trial and get a chance to prepare our defense!"

"Agreed," said Brad.

Dan suddenly grinned. "Now I know why I picked you two," and with that he got up and left the room.

After informing Admiral Dodge of Brad and Jason's 'demand' Dodge grinned and said he would contact the Praetor and start discussing this matter, but he wouldn't guarantee anything.

While the Admiral and the Praetor engaged in daily, long and sometimes heated, discussions, the Enterprise continued at Warp 6 towards the Romulan Neutral Zone, which separated the Romulan Star Empire and the United Federation of Planets. They had been informed a Romulan Bird of Prey would meet them at specific coordinates and guide the Enterprise across the one light year wide zone and on to Romulus and were warned to stay right with the escort ship and not attempt to move away in any way shape or form. Any such move would be considered an aggressive act and dealt with immediately.

Picard frowned at that order. He didn't like taking orders from the Romulans. "You would think, Number One," he said as he sat and pulled down on his tunic, "That they don't trust us!"

Riker smiled and replied, "Well it will be history, sir. We will be the first Federation Starship to officially visit Romulus, so I suppose we have to be on our best behavior."

"Whatever that might be," harrumphed Picard, causing Riker to laugh.

At long last word arrived they were soon to be at the specified coordinates and as they would be asked to show themselves to the Commander of the Romulan Bird of Prey for verification, the Admiral, Dan, Jason and Brad all headed for the Bridge.

Picard barely acknowledged their presence as he stared at the screen.

"All right," groused Picard. We are here. So where are they?"

Everyone continued to stare at the screen, but nothing happened. Suddenly Jason pointed. "There!" he said.

Picard looked at him and then back at the screen. "I do not see anything young man. Worf, what do the sensors show?"

"There does not appear to be anything sir," he growled.

Picard again looked over at Jason. "What did you see Lt?"

"It seemed to be a ripple or distortion in that space. I guess it wasn't anything," he mumbled embarrassedly.

Just then Worf exclaimed, "I do have something in that area, Captain!"

Again everyone was intent on the specified area, but still no Romulan Bird of Prey appeared. Finally the ship de-cloaked but just sat silently.

"Shall we hail them sir," asked Worf.

"No, we are their guests, so let them to hail us."

Still the Romulan ship remained silent.

At last Picard sat down, pulled again at his tunic, as was his habit, and said, "Well, two can play this game. Let's see how long this stare down lasts."

Two minutes later Worf reported in a prideful voice, "They are hailing us sir."

"On screen," said Picard immediately as he stood and watched the face of a scowling Romulan Commander appear.

"You are right on time Captain. We will now go through the neutral zone and I remind you once again to remain with us. Any overt or act otherwise will be interpreted as an aggressive act and dealt with promptly."

Picard, giving his best smile, although inwardly seething, said, "Those were my orders Commander. I assure you we will not do anything but follow you to our destination."

"Good. Once through the zone we will lead you to Romulus and you will maintain a stationary orbit in the area indicated," and with that the screen went black.

"Captain," said Admiral Dodge, "She didn't ask to identify my party."

"On the contrary Admiral," said Jason quickly. "That guy standing beside her kept glancing down. I think he had pictures of us and just before the screen went black the Commander looked at him and he gave an almost unnoticeable nod."

"Very astute, Lt!" said Picard. "That's exactly what they were doing. This shows why you were so magnificent in Captain Janeway's trial and why you got her acquitted!"

Jason blushed furiously as he mumbled a thank you and received a slap on the back from Dan.

"All right, helm - maintain a specific space and match the Romulans speed. Do not vary." He then turned to Admiral Dodge. "Admiral a spot of tea from this rigorous moment sounds good."

"Indeed it does, Captain" laughed the Admiral and the two headed for the Ready Room.

Riker looked at Captain Raymond. "Captain, the three of you are welcome to remain on the Bridge, but if you wish to go to the Mess Hall I can have Worf escort you."

The three men, in awe of being on The Enterprise's Bridge and watching Captain Picard in action remained silent a moment, and then Dan replied, "I think we can find our way, Commander, but if we get lost send out the St. Bernard's."

Riker laughed good-naturedly and then took his seat as the three left the Bridge.

"Wow," said Brad. "Picard sure stood his ground against that Romulan Commander. "That was awesome!"

"Just shows why he's a Starship Captain and you're not," said Jason, ribbing Brad about the remark Captain Picard made during the trial of Captain Janeway. Both Dan and Brad laughed, albeit Brad's face did turn a slight shade of red.

At long last they arrived at Romulus and the Bird of Prey, after apparently reaching a specific spot, stopped.

"All stop," ordered Picard.

"They are hailing," said Worf.

"On screen," replied Picard, as he remained seated. The Commander's scowling face appeared.

"This is your stationary orbit Captain. Please remain here. We will be sending a ship over shortly for your passengers."

Picard, having been advised of Jason and Brad's decision to not beam down unless they were given permission to speak to Lt Tucker, stood and pulled down his tunic.

"Have you been apprised of any decision regarding our counsel's request to speak to their client, Commander?"

The Commander frowned. "I have not been given any instructions beyond what I have said. Please explain."

Picard dutifully explained Lt Armstrong's statement that he would refuse to beam down unless granted the privilege of speaking to Lt Tucker before the trial and that Admiral Dodge and The Praetor had been in discussions on this matter during the trip to Romulus.

The Commander shook his head. "I have not been given any orders regarding that situation and besides, you are at Romulus and you will obey our laws. I am sending a ship over now, Captain," and with that the screen went black.

Picard frowned as he slapped his Comm Badge. "Captain Picard to Admiral Dodge."

"Here Captain," came an immediate reply.

"Do you have everyone present, sir?"

"Yes Captain. We are all in my quarters."

"We have arrived at Romulus and the Romulan Commander is sending over a shuttle to transport you to the planet surface."

"What about my request, Captain?" asked Jason.

"The Commander knows nothing of it and has not been apprised of any change in his orders, so it looks like you might have to fight it out down there."

"In a pig's eye," said Jason vehemently and then looked at Admiral Dodge with a horrified expression. Dodge at first shocked, now smiled.

"Well said young man," said Picard with a grin as he looked at Riker. "Admiral, what is your feeling on this?"

"I suggest we hail the planet and request or demand as the case may be, a decision, Captain."

"Agreed," and he turned and nodded to Worf to initiate the contact as he said, "I'll get back to you Admiral."

While the Romulan shuttle sat beside The Enterprise, Admiral Dodge, Captain Picard and a representative of the Praetor wrangled back and forth.

Finally Dodge said in an exasperated tone, "Well then we have made this trip for nothing. Give my regards and best wishes to Lt Tucker," and he walked out of the room.

The representative was clearly flustered. "Wait. You mean you are not going to defend the Lt! That is clearly unlike human behavior. You always want to help your personnel!"

"That we do," said Captain Picard. "But in this instance it appears you are not willing to even let us speak to the man, so what is the point of a defense? Picard out."

Picard then tapped his Badge. "Commander, maintain ship's silence but activate Impulse engines and turn us around . . . slowly."

"Sir?" asked Riker, clearly puzzled.

"Act like we are leaving Number One," said Picard with a smile at Jason, Brad and Dan, who were standing to one side during all this exchange.

As The Enterprise slowly turned around the Commander of the Bird of Prey hailed them. "What are you doing?"

"We are leaving," responded Riker, playing the game to the hilt now that he understood.

"But you can't! The trial of your Lt is scheduled . . . "

"Then it will go on without us," replied Riker and closed communication.

As The Enterprise completed its turn and started to slowly move away the planet hailed them. "Sir," said Worf, "The Praetor is asking to speak to Admiral Dodge."

Riker grinned broadly. "Patch it to his quarters, Worf," he said as he tapped his badge. "Admiral, it seems The Praetor wishes to speak to you."

The Admiral grinned, motioned everyone including Picard to his side and said, "I'm ready Commander." A moment later the face of the ruler of the Romulan Star Empire appeared on screen.

"I am told you are leaving, Admiral. May I inquire why?"

The Admiral explained in blunt, succinct terms exactly why and The Praetor in turn expressed surprise, saying she had left orders allowing the meeting between counsel and defendant to take place and there must have been some 'miscommunication'.

Smiling, the Admiral expressed his thanks and said they would now go to the Transporter room to transport to the still hovering shuttle.

As soon as the screen went black Jason exploded. "In a pig's eye there was miscommunication!"

"Agreed," said the Admiral, "But the fact is we called their bluff and won, one of few victories we might experience in this assignment I might add."

Jason grinned as he realized the truth of that statement, only for the Admiral to say, "Don't gloat, Lt. It's not very Starfleet of you," and he broke out into a loud laugh as he turned to leave the room and head for the Transporter Room.

Once there and on the pad, Picard wished them well. The Transporter Chief suddenly informed Picard the transportation to the surface had now changed. Instead of the shuttle he would beam them instead to a Romulan Transport, which had just come up from the surface. Picard merely nodded and turned to the men.

"Lt, I hope your brilliance once again comes through," Picard said to Jason, and then added, "Energize," and the four men disappeared in a twinkling of lights.

As they appeared on the Transport, two Romulan guards with Phasers at the ready stood beside a man who appeared to be an Ambassador of some kind. He stepped forward and greeted them, did not tell them his name but merely showed them to their seats, all the while admonishing them to stay quiet and not be inquisitive of their surroundings.

After he walked away to his own seat, Brad whispered, "How can we be inquisitive when all the windows are blacked out? That was a dumb statement."

Jason and Dan both snickered and then Dan said, "Well let's just appear as meek, mild and very well-mannered and obedient Starfleet gentlemen."

"I have to agree," said the Admiral. "We don't want to have any more confrontations now that we won one battle, but I really feel like using Jason's expression, 'in a pig's eye' and telling you two gentlemen to go get them!" Then he chuckled and Jason, Brad and Dan joined in, causing the Ambassador to look back at them with a puzzled expression.

The Transport seemed to be taking a long time to reach the planet and Jason suddenly blurted out, "Are we there yet?"

"Nah," replied Brad. "We are on a Merry Go Round without the horses. I do believe they are trying to confuse us by going around the back side of the planet and then making such a slow turn back they think we won't know the difference."

"But we do, huh?" said Jason with a smirk.

"Of course," replied Brad. "Tune in on the floor plating and you can feel the different vibrations. There, we just turned again."

"I didn't know you were versed in space travel, Brad," said the Admiral.

"Well I'm no expert sir, but I have had a couple of rides in space, courtesy of my dad when he was alive. He taught me to 'feel the floor' as the ship tells you through that what it's doing."

"What happened to your father?" asked Dan.

"Killed, sir. On a mission about eight years back. No one ever knew what happened to the ship. It just didn't come back," said Brad quietly.

The Admiral thought back and then nodded. "The Starship Henry, right?"

"Yes sir." Brad turned back to Dodge. "You wouldn't know what happened would you Admiral?"

"I'm sorry, Captain, I don't. I just remember the ship's name from your time frame."

Brad sighed and turned forward. Jason didn't say a word during this time as he knew of Brad's dad's disappearance and so concentrated to see if he could 'feel the floor.' Suddenly he grinned.

"There! The ship turned again."

Brad chuckled. "You're getting it Jason!"

A few moments later the ship's descent could be felt as it entered a long dive down. Everything was quiet and then they could feel the Transport entering a glide phase, heard muted talk from the pilot up front and suddenly everything stopped.

"Boy if we thought it was dark in here before, it's pitch-black now," said Jason.

"I think we've entered a building," said Dan.

The Ambassador stood and walked forward for a few minutes and then returned and motioned for them to rise.

"We will exit now. Stay together and stay close to me," he said as the door swooshed open.

As the four stepped out each made a quick look around. Sure enough they were inside a building, but a building that seemed to have more Romulan guards with phasers than Transports or Shuttles.

"Oh look, we have an Honor Guard to welcome us," smirked Jason very quietly.

"Easy gentlemen," cautioned the Admiral. "Let's just be quiet now and no snide remarks."

"Sorry sir," replied Jason and the entire group obediently and silently followed the Ambassador.

They stepped through a door a guard was holding open and Jason was quick to note he was staring hard and with disdain at all four of them. Only their footsteps echoed in a long corridor and at last the Ambassador stopped, opened a door, motioned them in and said to make them selves comfortable, that he would return shortly. After the door closed Dan turned to Jason.

"Jason you seem to be full of smart-ass remarks on this trip and that's not like you. I want you to hold your tongue, clear?" His voice had a tinge of anger that Jason had not felt directed at him before.

Jason bobbed his head. "Sorry sir. I'm just nervous about this whole thing and those remarks just slipped out."

"Well keep them to your self for the rest of the time we are here," he said, his voice still hard.

"I have to agree with the Captain, Jason, to mind your tongue," said the Admiral, "but at the same time I must admit I found myself thinking virtually the same thing and actually wanted to laugh on a couple of your remarks. But we must contain ourselves while we are here, even though disagreeing with possible treatment. After all, we are their guests, and virtually the first humans to officially be invited to the Romulan home world. So, let's all behave, shall we?"

Everyone nodded agreement and then looked around at the surroundings. It was almost a bare room, void of everything except a small table and a few chairs. They moved to the chairs and sat down, all remaining silent except for a few coughs and cleared throats.

After about twenty minutes the Ambassador returned and said, "Lt Armstrong and Captain Jordan will accompany me. We have moved the spy to a room for you to visit him."

"Alleged spy," snapped the Admiral, "And why can't all four of us see him?"

"Only the immediate counsel has been granted this privilege. They can report to you after the visit," replied the Ambassador in a haughty tone. "It is time," and he turned for the door.

Jason and Brad looked at Admiral Dodge and Dan. The Admiral nodded and said, "Be thorough on whatever they allow you to do." Jason and Brad acknowledged the order and left with the Ambassador.

After a myriad of corridors, turns and lifts they were finally led into a room, which like their original room, had a small table and three chairs. The Ambassador, without a word, closed the door and left.

Brad and Jason looked at one another and then silently sat down beside each other. Afraid to say anything for fear the room would be monitored they both were quiet for a bit until finally Brad looked at Jason and then yawned mightily and placed a hand over his mouth.

In a whisper he said, "I wonder what's taking them so long?"

Jason smiled at Brad's yawn and then proceeded to yawn himself while answering in a whisper, "Just trying to make us wait I think."

Finally deciding not talking would look suspicious, Jason said, ""I wish we had a chance to see Romulus. When we first got here in the Enterprise it looked like a beautiful planet."

"Yeah," replied Brad. "But it looks like they don't want us to enjoy their planet, the way they blacked out the windows of the transport. Heck, we're lawyers. What would we see anyway?" Both men chuckled.

A few moments later the door opened and two guards walked in closely followed by a dirty, disheveled and unshaven Lt Tucker. His hair was matted and dirty and both hands were shackled behind his back with leg irons around each ankle. The man had also lost weight. Both Jason and Brad stood, total shock registering on their faces.

Tucker stood in the middle of the room and stared in equal shock at the two men. "Starfleet?" he managed to finally say.

Jason whirled to the Ambassador, cold fury on his face. "Unshackle that man!"

"He is a spy and will be kept restrained," replied the Ambassador.

"He is not a spy!" replied Brad vehemently.

The Ambassador looked at the men. "Ask your questions so we may return him to his cell."

"I will not!" said Jason. "I will not ask a single question of Lt Tucker until you have cleaned him up and shaved him. Look at him! Long hair, dirty, unshaven! Not only that -he stinks! That is not becoming of a Starfleet Officer. Even though you have him imprisoned he should be treated humanely and by the Geneva Conduct of Prisoners."

"We are not a member of your Federation, so that law does not apply to us," replied the Ambassador coldly.

"It applies to everyone regardless of any affiliation," snapped Brad. "It is humane treatment, regardless of what they are charged with."

Jason crossed his arms over his chest and stared at the Ambassador, who now seemed a little shocked at his refusal to interview the prisoner. He stared back.

"I repeat Mr. Ambassador, take that man and clean him up," he said, his voice still denoting extreme anger. "I will not interview him or ask a single question until that is done," and with that he turned and moving to a chair sat down. Brad did the same.

The Ambassador said something quietly to the two guards, who grabbed Lt Tucker's arms and led him from the room. The Ambassador followed without a word.

One hour went by and then two and Tucker was not brought back. Unwilling to talk in this room Jason and Brad resorted to leaning into each other's ear to whisper.

"You just may have cost us a chance to interview Tucker, my friend."

"I know," whispered Jason. "But I just thought we had to show concern for Tucker and have a little backbone in front of these Romulans. It seems to be the only thing they understand. Otherwise they will try to just run over us."

"Diplomacy be damned?" asked Brad with a slight chuckle.

"Right," answered Jason with a grin.

Another hour went by and both men were concerned they had indeed run too big a bluff and lost. Thirty minutes later the door suddenly swooshed open and once again the two guards led Lt. Tucker into the room.

However, his appearance was dramatically different. Now the shackles had been removed, he was wearing clean clothes and had obviously been bathed and shaved as his face was now bereft of the beard. However, all his hair was shaved off.

"We had to remove all his hair as it was full of vermin," said the Ambassador stiffly.

Jason smiled at the Ambassador and in a soft, friendly voice replied, "Yes I imagine it was. Thank you for cleaning him up Mr. Ambassador," He then turned and looked at Tucker and motioned for him to take a chair.

"I'm Lt. Jason Armstrong and this is Captain Bradley Jordan. We will be representing you at your hearing. First of all, how are you Lt Tucker?" asked Jason.

"Much better now, sir," he replied softly. "Thank you."

"Have they mistreated you?"

"If by that you mean torture or beating me, no sir. They just didn't allow me to clean myself."

Jason nodded and looked at the Ambassador. "Please, take a seat sir. I also have to make clear in my mind certain stipulations regarding this interview."

Somewhat reluctantly the Ambassador moved to the empty chair, but moved it off to one side and then sat down.

"Sir, can you explain this Romulan Right of Statement, what it can or cannot entail, length, etc., and whether I or the prosecution can add or say anything during this statement?"

"I believe this was explained to Admiral Dodge, but simply put it is a statement by the person being charged as to his guilt or innocence to the specific charge. He alone makes this statement and may say whatever he wishes and talk as long as he wants, as long as he stays within the charge. Neither the defense nor the prosecution may interrupt during this time. Following his statement, the judgment is handed down."

"By whom?" asked Brad.

"After a brief discussion with the other members of the council, the decision is rendered by the presiding Chief of the Council who is sitting in judgment."

"The defense does not get to add anything following the statement?" asked Jason.

"No, you do not."

"Regarding the prosecution and his witnesses, can we also question the witnesses?"

"No, the prosecution presents their witnesses, which are the two guards who found your Lt."

"What if their story is different from Lt Tuckers? May we not inquire about the difference?" asked Brad.

"No," replied the Ambassador in a cold tone. "You however may make your case after the prosecution presents their case and then the prisoner makes his statement. It is as simple as that."

"That is not simple at all," replied Jason with a condescending smile at the Ambassador. "It seems a method to shorten any trial and not allow all evidence to be presented or questioned."

"It is our way in trials and, after all, you are on Romulus."

"Yes," smiled Jason, "And the adage, 'when in Rome' obviously applies. Well when you said the defense may present our case, just exactly what does Romulan law say in that regard?"

"That you make your statement on the facts of the case as you know them," replied the Ambassador in a bored tone. Jason smiled. He had just been given a clue that he fully intended to follow up on.

"Thank you, Mr. Ambassador, for the enlightenment." He then turned back to Tucker. "Lt I want you to tell me the entire story from when Captain Allen and your ship Jasper arrived at that planet."

"Yes sir," replied Tucker, who then cleared his throat.

"We were on patrol along the neutral zone when we came upon an outpost that the Captain felt should be deserted. However, sensors indicated some activity and yet strangely seemed blocked, so he sent an away team down to investigate."

"And you were on the away team?" asked Jason.

"Yes. I am part of Security so I was along to help protect the away team. Anyway we approached the outpost and suddenly saw a Romulan come out of a building, so Commander Casteel told us to get back to the beam down point and we all hightailed out of there." Then Tucker, looking embarrassed, continued. "All of a sudden I had to go . . . bad. Maybe it was nerves at seeing someone, and as Jenkins the other security guard was with the group I slipped into the trees, feeling I could take care of business and then run and catch up. However, as I came out from behind a bush I was faced with two Romulans who had Phasers pointed at me. I didn't even have a chance to tap my badge, before they grabbed me and took me into the building."

"What happened then?" asked Brad as he looked up from his Padd, where he had been jotting down notes.

"Well I was taken to their Commander who wanted to know what Starfleet was doing on this planet. I told him we thought it was a deserted planet and yet our sensors were giving some strange readings, so our Captain sent us down to investigate and when we saw it was occupied headed back to beam up to the ship. Only I had a Mother Nature call and then the guards caught me."

"Did he believe you?" asked Jason.

"Apparently not, sir. He kept calling me a spy and they tied me up and I was eventually taken to a ship and then here, where I've been in isolation ever since."

"What else can you tell us Lt.?"

"That's it, sir."

"There isn't anything else you can add?" asked Brad. "This doesn't give us much to work with Lt."

"I know, sir. But that's the whole story and it's the truth. All I did was go behind a bush and now they are accusing me of being a spy," he said in a forlorn voice. "The guards keep telling me they are going to execute me, sir!"

"Not if we can help it, Lt.," said Jason, trying to keep Tucker's spirits up. "Are you sure there isn't anything else you can add to what happened?"

The Lt forlornly shook his head. "No, sir," he said in almost a whisper.

"Well it doesn't give us much for this Romulan Right of Statement," mused Jason as he looked at Brad, who merely scrunched his mouth and gave a slight shrug of his shoulders.

Looking at the Ambassador Jason said, "We will need to meet again with Lt Tucker tomorrow. In the meantime Captain Jordan and I will work on his statement."

"I'm afraid that's impossible," replied the Ambassador. "The hearing is scheduled to begin at ten hundred hours tomorrow."

"What!" Jason and Brad said in unison.

"I'm sorry if you weren't informed of that fact. That has been stated all along that you would have this one meeting and then the hearing would be the next day."

"We've come a long way just to have a one hour meeting with our client, Mr. Ambassador," protested Brad. "On Earth we have two to four weeks to prepare for a defense."

The Ambassador smiled and started to open his mouth when Brad held up his hand. "I know, I know, we are not on Earth," and he sighed loudly.

"Does Romulan law allow for continuances?" asked Jason hopefully.

"If by that you mean a delay - no. When a hearing is scheduled it goes on at that time," responded the Ambassador.

"That's just great." Jason then looked at Brad. "Guess we won't get any sleep tonight." Brad shook his head.

Jason then looked back at Lt Tucker, who assuming the question would be if he had thought of any more information, he quickly shook his head no and mumbled, "I'm sorry, sir. There isn't anything more I can add."

"If you are finished with the prisoner I will have him escorted back to his cell," said the Ambassador.

"I hope the cell is clean, sir," said Brad firmly. "Now that the Hearing is scheduled for tomorrow you certainly don't want a dirty prisoner to present, especially with four representatives of Starfleet in attendance."

"I assure you he will look as presentable tomorrow as he does now," said the Ambassador in a smug tone.

Jason reached out and shook Lt Tucker's hand and Brad did likewise. "We will see you tomorrow then, Lt. Keep your chin up. We'll do the best we can."

All of a sudden Lt Tucker broke into a wide grin. "Now I know! I've been sitting here trying to figure out why you two were familiar to me. You defended Captain Janeway in her court martial and won!"

Both Jason and Brad smiled, while the two Romulan guards suddenly straightened and looked at them with newfound respect on their faces. The Ambassadors expression was first shock, then almost awe.

"You are the two who defeated Starfleet in the Janeway trial?" asked the Ambassador.

"Yes, sir, we are those two men," replied Jason with a grin.

"Well, no wonder Starfleet sent you to defend Lt Tucker. Your reputations precede you gentlemen. I'm sorry I didn't recognize you," said the Ambassador with a soft tone and friendly smile as he extended his hand to first Jason and then Brad.

"Well new case, new world," grinned Brad. "We'll see how good we are tomorrow."

The Ambassador spoke to the guards who then led Lt Tucker from the room. Motioning for Jason and Brad to follow him the Ambassador left the room and turned left.

"Uhm, we came from the opposite direction," Brad said quickly.

"No fear gentlemen. I am taking you to a shuttle to take you to your quarters for the evening. We have already done the same with Admiral Dodge and Captain Raymond."

"Oh," said Brad. "I guess we have been here for quite a while."

"Four and one-half hours to be exact. We will have food sent to your room once you have refreshed yourselves and relayed to the Admiral and Captain the results of the interview with Lt Tucker. Also," he said as a door opened and they stepped into a shuttle bay, "We will send transport for you in the morning. As your case is the first on the docket what time do you wish to be picked up?"

"We would like to be there thirty minutes ahead of the scheduled hearing," said Jason.

"Very well I will have transport for you at 0915 hours. This shuttle will take you to your quarters, gentlemen," said the Ambassador as he extended a hand to the shuttle just pulling abreast of them.

After arriving at their hotel room Jason and Brad spend most of the hour informing Admiral Dodge and Dan of the happenings, including Jason's refusal to interview Lt Tucker until he was cleaned up, and this amused Dodge and Dan immensely.

Jason also added, "Somehow Romulus has learned of the Janeway trial and when Tucker suddenly recognized us you could have blown the guards and the Ambassador over with a feather. They seemed to actually respect us then."

The Admiral and Dan both smiled. "Well thank goodness for the grapevine, or whatever communication got back to them, which also means they have been following up on our cleaning up Starfleet."

"That's probably why you were specifically picked, Admiral," stated Dan.

When all discussion was finished, they cleaned up, had dinner and then retired to Jason's room to start working on Tucker's statement. They planned to write it all out on a Padd and then let Tucker read it at the hearing.

At last they felt satisfied with their statement and leaning back in their chairs, both gave a mighty stretch.

Jason shook his head. "I don't feel good about this Brad. We just don't have anything to go on to defend Tucker. It boils down to his statement against the Romulan guards."

"I know. It's kind of sad really. Like Captain Raymond said, it's a 'lose-lose' situation and that's what I feel will happen."

"I feel so discouraged!" said Jason. "I wish I could talk to somebody - just to vent my frustra . . ." Suddenly Jason smiled and went to the door.

"What are you doing?" asked Brad, and then as Jason went out the door, he followed and yelled "Hey, where are you going?"

Jason hadn't gone more than two steps when a Romulan Guard appeared. Jason smiled. "Hi I need a console. I have to send a message back to Starfleet."

The Guard frowned, held his hand up and said, "Stay right here. I will inquire." He then moved about ten steps away and a low murmur of his voice was heard speaking to someone on his communicator. This went on for a few minutes, and then the guard abruptly walked further down the hall and entered a room.

"What are you up to Jason," whispered Brad.

Before he could answer the guard walked out of the room carrying a console. The guard handed it to Jason and said, "The Ambassador said you may use this for thirty minutes."

Jason grabbed it and as he wheeled to hurry back to his room yelled over his shoulder, "Thank you and thank the Ambassador for me!"

Brad scurried after Jason and as they re-entered their room, Jason nodded for him to bolt the door. After turning on the console, Jason reached into his tunic pocket and pulled out a small instrument and inserted it into the console.

Brad grinned. "You never leave home without your scrambler I see!"

Jason nodded and punched in some numbers, then sat and waited, hoping the Romulan communication system would reach across space. The screen blinked several times, turned black and then suddenly the countenance of Kathryn Janeway appeared. Upon seeing Jason, she smoothed back her disheveled hair, tightened her robe around her shoulders and smiled brightly. "Jason!"

"Hello Kathryn. I'm sorry to disturb you. I guess it's the middle of the night there."

Kathryn seemed to blush, but looked intently at Jason's eyes. "No problem, Jason. You look upset. What's wrong?" she asked as Chakotay sat down beside her.

Jason shrugged and then blurted out, "We are here at Romulus to defend a Starfleet Lt and well – with Romulan law you can't do anything!"

"You're on Romulus! Tell me about it Jason."

"Well I can't question the witnesses, can't cross exam the prosecutor, the Lt gives his statement, which I can't add or say anything about and then I give a statement and they make a ruling! You just can't do anything and I feel so . . . so helpless!"

Kathryn smiled despite her concern. She had never seen Jason this way and said, "Jason, from watching you when you defended me all I can say to you is to . . . just . . . be . . . yourself!"

"How can I, Kathryn when I can't do a darn thing to help my client! The Romulan law is basically just tunnel vision!"

"You will think of a way, Jason. Just relax and be yourself. Everything will work out." Kathryn, seeing Brad standing behind Jason asked, "Is only Brad with you?"

"No, Admiral Dodge and Captain Raymond are also here, but I think if they knew I was talking to you I'd be shipped back in a millisecond – if not in a crate."

Kathryn laughed which made Jason smile and he realized he felt better just talking to her. He looked toward the door as pounding was heard. "I think the Romulans are here to get their console back."

"Well then we better end this conversation. You'll be fine Jason. Take care, my friend," and her screen went black.

The minute Kathryn's line turned off Jason furiously started to type a note to Starfleet. Sirs – I am sorry to report it doesn't look like I can do anything to help Lt Tucker. The Romulan laws are very strict and I feel very frustrated in this matter. I just can't . . .

The pounding increased so Jason leaned back and crossing his arms over his chest and taking a reflective pose, looked toward Brad who was standing near the door and nodded. Brad opened the door and the Romulan guard immediately strode in to Jason. "We need the console back now."

"But I haven't finished my message," he complained.

The guard said, "You were allowed thirty minutes," and took the console from Jason even as he yelled, "Hey, I said I'm not done."

The guard did not respond, simply strode out of the room and closed the door behind him.

Brad looked at Jason and then both men grinned. "You know Jason someday you are going to get into big trouble," said Brad with a laugh. Then he added, "Well as you didn't finish that message I suggest we get some sleep. Tomorrow is already here."

Meanwhile Kathryn, after turning off her console sighed deeply.

"Trouble?" asked Chakotay.

"He is very troubled, honey. I've never seen him that way before. He always seems to know exactly what he's going to do and can react so quickly to a situation in the courtroom!"

"He did seem a bit worried, which is unusual for him. I hope he doesn't get in trouble for making that call."

"Well I will never mention it that's for sure," smiled Kathryn. I just hope he does all right. I wish we could help him, but just think of it, sweetheart, they are on Romulus!"

"I know, no one is ever allowed to visit that country – only a couple times covertly from what I've heard. But - their fame in defending the infamous Captain Janeway is spreading," he added with a laugh. "Anyway, I'm sure he will think of something."

"Well we best get back to bed," and Kathryn rose and started for the bedroom. Then she stopped and with a sly, impish smile, said, "I don't suppose your engine can 'start up' right away – and where we left off?" and then burst out laughing at Chakotay's startled expression.

Chakotay suddenly grinned and replied, "Oh I think a little 'primer' will start the engine just fine!"

Jason and Brad, along with Dan and Admiral Dodge were escorted into The Great Hall at exactly 09:30 hours. A hush fell over those already in attendance as Jason and Brad moved to their desk and Dan and the Admiral sat down directly behind them. Jason laid his briefcase on the table and looked forward. There was a very high dais, with three seats on the left and right and one bigger and higher seat in the middle. Obviously for the presiding judge, thought Jason.

On each side of the hall were bleacher type seats, and as he looked back he noticed row upon row of bench seats clear to the back of this massive auditorium. The bleachers and lower floor were full of Romulans, almost to overflowing.

"I didn't know the Romulans took such an interest in legal proceedings," whispered Jason to Brad.

"Neither did I, but I guess we are celebrities," he whispered back. Jason just smiled.

As he stood looking to the rear, Jason happened to glance up and noticed a balcony, with plush red velvet drapes lining all the walls and a high chair, almost throne like, in the middle, with smaller chairs to the sides. Before he could comment on this, the doors to the side of the Dais opened and Lt. Tucker was led to their table.

Jason was pleased to see he was not shackled and again was clean and well kempt. Tucker nodded to Jason and Brad, and when introduced to Admiral Dodge and Dan, he smiled nervously and then quickly sat down and rubbed his forehead and then his neck. With the other hand he kneaded his stomach.

Jason leaned down and asked, "Are you all right Lt.?"

"I'm just a little queasy about these proceedings, sir. This could be the last day of my life."

"Well try and relax. I know it's a trying time but we'll do our best." He then handed the Padd having the Statement and asked him to read it.

After Tucker read the Statement and looked up, Brad asked, "Does that about cover it?"

Tucker bobbed his head. "It's great, sir. But I don't know whether I can do it justice, just reading it. I have to be honest and admit I'm very scared and feel like I'm going to faint. I know that's not very Starfleet, but . . ."

Jason just grinned and replied, "Just try and relax – you'll be okay."

At exactly ten hundred hours a side door slid open, everyone in the room rose, including the Starfleet entourage, and six black robed Vulcans walked in and silently stood behind their chairs. One minute later a gray-haired man with a brilliant blue robe walked in and sat in the middle and highest chair. The rest of the men then followed suit and sat down, with much scraping and shoving and positioning of chairs.

The Hall was absolutely silent and all eyes were on the center chair. The Presiding Judge, however, remained absolutely still and sat there quietly. Jason kept waiting for the proceedings to get underway, but the Judge remained still.

Suddenly there was a great ceremonial blare of music and again everyone in the room rose to their feet, including the Starfleet representatives. However, they only did that because everyone else in the room stood. 'When in Rome' thought Jason as he quickly stood up.

It was then that Jason noticed everyone had turned to the back and all eyes were looking up. He slowly turned and his mouth opened. Ten Romulans in fine ceremonial dress walked in escorting a woman, elegantly dressed and with the air of someone extremely important, and who then took the throne. It was the Praetor, the supreme commander of the Romulan Star Empire!

"Wow," whispered Jason. "And you thought we were the celebrities!"

"Just a slight mistake," Brad whispered back.

Once seated the Praetor looked directly down at Admiral Dodge and nodded her head. He momentarily bowed his head down in respect and then turned and faced forward and indicated for the rest to do the same. Brad, Jason, Dan and Tucker, immediately bowed their head.

A moment later the ceremonial music resonated once again throughout the hall and again the room was a cacophony of noise as everyone sat down.

Jason looked up at the presiding judge and was momentarily startled to see him looking directly at him. Not knowing what to do or say, Jason did the only thing he could think of given the circumstances: he nodded his head.

Immediately the judge spoke. "This is a hearing on the guilt or innocence of Lt Charles Tucker of the Federation and Starship Jasper, who is charged with being a spy. We have as his counsel, by special arrangement, Admiral Chester Dodge, Chief of all Starfleet, Captain Daniel Raymond, Chief of Legal Affairs for Starfleet and the Admiral's chief assistant. Representing the accused are Captain Bradley Jordan and Lt Jason Armstrong, legal affairs officers.

"I am Jhar Kron, Chief Head of the Great Council and will be making the final ruling in this case once all evidence has been presented. We are honored this morning to have in our presence the Praetor of all Romulus. You honor us with your presence Praetor."

Kron then adjusted his seat and looked at the Prosecutor. "Are you ready to present your case?"

"I am," he replied in a strong, booming voice.

"And Lt Tucker, are you ready with your Right of Statement?"

Tucker stood and started to speak, cleared his throat and trying once again, managed to say, "I am your honor, I mean Chief Council." And he quickly sat down, feeling mortified at his weak, nervous voice.

Jason was ready to stand with his affirmative statement but instead the Chief council nodded to the prosecutor to begin, who immediately called one of the guards who had caught Tucker coming out of the bush.

As the guard related his story of capturing the spy, Jason ground his teeth. He wanted to stand up and object twice, but Brad, sensing this had turned his head and was staring directly at Jason. That stare helped him to remain seated.

The second guard was called and reiterated almost the identical story. So identical in fact, that Jason felt sure they had been rehearsed. The Captain of the Romulan squad then followed with his story of interrogating the 'Federation Spy'.

Suddenly Jason could stand it no longer and jumped to his feet. "I object Chief Counsel. That is hearsay and a complete lie. Lt Tucker is not a spy!"

"Sit down Lt Armstrong," said the Chief Counsel, in a calm voice. "You are not allowed to object in this hearing. I'm sure that was all explained to you."

"Yes it was, but the prosecutor is misleading the Council!"

"You will have your chance to refute that statement when your client gives his Right of Statement. Now please sit down and remain quiet."

"I just wanted to make my objections known, Chief Council," said Jason as Brad tugged furiously at his coat sleeve.

"Sit down Jason," he hissed, "Before you damage our case."

Jason reluctantly sat down, but before doing that he continued to look at the Chief Council for a moment.

The prosecutor, after glaring at Jason, continued a parade of witnesses, whom Jason was unaware of, including the Captain of the ship that transported Tucker to Romulus, the Chief of the prison where Tucker was kept and several guards who were posted at his cell. All told virtually the same story, that he was a captured spy who continued to deny this and was very belligerent at first, but soon became meek and mild. "A very weak Federation officer, I must say," said one prison guard with a sneer in Tucker's direction.

Jason and Brad both seethed inwardly at being unable to counter all the unexpected witnesses and testimony with objections or questions, and in fact at one point Brad physically held Jason in his seat when anticipating him again jumping to his feet.

At long last the prosecutor stated he had presented his case and the Chief Counsel turned to Lt Tucker.

"Lt Tucker, you may present your Right of Statement now."

Jason immediately stood. "Chief Counsel, I was told I would be allowed to present our side of the case."

"That is what the Right of Statement is Lt Armstrong. You prepared that statement for your client I am told, so that is your statement."

"But, sir, I was informed I would be able to speak and the prosecutor had witnesses we were not told of."

"You were misinformed Lt Armstrong. Now Lt Tucker - your Right of Statement if you please."

Jason remained standing until he heard a "Sit down Lt." coming from the Admiral behind him and promptly sat down. Lt Tucker stood and picked up the Padd, looked at it a moment and then looked up at the Chief Counsel.

"My name is Charles Tucker. I am a Lt in Starfleet, which is part of the Federation of Planets. As an officer I am sworn to the highest degree of professional conduct. I am sworn to obey orders and to always tell the truth and I say to you now I am not a spy. I was not spying on that mission, but was merely with an away team that had been ordered by my Captain Allen of the Starship Jasper to investigate strange readings we were getting from the planet.

"The strange readings turned out to be a squad of Romulans at a deserted Earth outpost, who shouldn't have been there. When we saw them we were ordered to return to the ship . . ." He hesitated a moment and cleared his throat and then said, "I detoured away from the away team for just a moment and 'went' behind a bush. When I came out two Romulan guards were standing there pointing phasers at me and . . ."

He stopped again and cleared his throat and after rubbing his forehead grasped his stomach with his free hand. "I . . ." he said as he started again but hesitated once more and upon glancing down at the Padd saw a Padd from Jason and on it were the words "Be sick! Collapse, right now!"

"I . . ." he again started to say, and then rubbing his forehead looked up at the Chief Counsel. "Your honor, I don't feel well, I . . ." and he collapsed to the floor.

A flurry of activity at the table resulted, with both Jason and Brad bending over him, while a concerned Admiral and Dan hovered nearby. Finally Jason got Tucker up on his seat, but unobtrusively, pushed his head, gently yet firmly down on the table. While Brad continued to tend to Tucker, Jason looked up at the dais.

"Chief Counsel, our client is very sick. He was sick yesterday from not receiving proper food and I will complete his Right of Statement."

"That is not allowed Lt. The Right of Statement must be made by the prisoner," said the monotone voice of the Chief Counsel.

"But look at him your honor. He is sick and unable to continue. He is entitled to a defense and as his lawyer I have the right to continue by reading his statement."

"He will continue it or there will be no statement," said the Chief harshly.

"What kind of people are you? He is entitled to a defense! That's what this hearing is all about and I demand to continue his statement!"

"Easy Lt." said Dan from behind.

Jason waved the Padd in the air. "His Right of Statement is right here and my client is obviously unable to handle his right!" Jason then bent over Tucker and lifting his head shoved the Padd in front of his face. "Read this Lt Tucker!"

A gurgle of slurred, incomprehensible words that were not only not understandable, but also barely heard came out of Tucker's mouth.

"Lt" asked Jason. "Do you want me to continue the Right of Statement for you?"

Tucker nodded his head. "Please . . . do . . . for me," he whispered.

"Our client has made an official request for me to continue his Right of Statement and I shall do just that." Without further word Jason started to read. He re-read the last two sentences where Tucker had stopped, and then before anyone could stop him, continued with the rest of the statement.

"I walked away from the away team for just a moment and 'went' behind a bush. When I came out two Romulan guards were standing there pointing phasers at me and I immediately put my hands up and said 'whoa, don't shoot, I just had to go to the bathroom'. But they grabbed me and took me into the building, where I was interrogated by a Captain and accused of being a spy. I vehemently deny being a spy."

Jason, now knowing for sure he had the floor and would not be stopped by the High Counsel, did not even look up, but felt an internal elation. He would give 'his' statement now!

"All of us, whether we be Earthlings, Romulans, Klingons, Vulcans, or whatever race, we are, are governed by the law of nature. We all obey orders from our commanding officers without question, and when Mother Nature calls, and she is the supreme commanding officer of our bodies as we all know, we obey her as well. I'm sure each of you at one time or another when you have been out in public has had to go to the bathroom real bad. I'm sure each of you at one time or another has been in a position where a bathroom wasn't available. So what do we do? We must obey the laws of nature or be embarrassed! So we improvise. We make do in any way we can.

"Lt Tucker improvised, ladies and gentlemen. He didn't want to be embarrassed in front of his compatriots. He was lucky though you see, because he was in the woods with lots of trees and bushes available. Not all of us are that lucky are we? Only one thing went wrong. When he came out after relieving himself he was captured by two guards and accused of spying!

"How can you spy when you are obeying the laws of nature and squatting behind a bush?

He was obeying the law of nature. He was relieving his body of the law of Mother Nature people!

Jason threw his arms out wide and spun around and looked up at the Praetor. "Good grief Praetor. The man just had to pee!"

Suddenly Jason stopped cold as he realized what he had said. Not only what he had said, but whom he had said it to! He heard a thump and looking down at Brad saw he had thrown his hand across the table and dropped his head on his forearm. He glanced out of the corner of his eye at the Admiral and noted he was sitting with pure wide-eyed horror and shock on his face, while Dan sat with his eyes closed and severely pinching the bridge of his nose with his left hand.

He looked up at the Praetor who was staring down at him and then Jason slowly turned towards the dais, realizing as he did so that every eye in the room was staring at him!

As he faced the dais, he saw each person on the dais was also staring at him with a stoic, impassive expression, although he thought he saw a couple of shoulders jiggling up and down. Oh God, what have I done? Jason moaned.

Suddenly Jason saw the Chief Counsel place his hand over his mouth and several of his aides bent their heads down. A suppressed chuckle was heard from the back of the room, and as Jason looked around he saw all eyes looking up at the Praetor. He did the same and saw she placed a hand over her mouth and her shoulders were bouncing up and down. Then unable to contain her laughter any longer she dropped her hand and started laughing out loud, and this in turn caused others in her royal entourage to start laughing, releasing what they had been trying to hold in. Soon the entire room was laughing hilariously and it was getting louder.

Jason glanced at the Admiral and saw his head was now hanging down but his shoulders were bouncing up and down. He saw the same with Dan. He looked at Brad but he was now leaning back in his chair, his head thrown back and was laughing so loud and hard his chair was on the verge of tipping over. Jason smiled and allowed himself a small chuckle, but he was still afraid he had just tossed the case into the dumper. Meanwhile the raucous laughter in the room kept increasing in intensity, but Jason now also heard clapping.

Jason stood quietly, his face flaming red, not quite knowing what to do or say, even though he had a slight smile on his face. Despite what was happening he still felt he was in big trouble. At long last the room became quiet as people gradually got control of their emotions and all dutifully faced toward the dais.

Before the Chief Counsel could say anything Jason said, "I wish to apologize to the court," and turning to look up, "And to the Praetor for my offensive language. It just popped out and I'm sorry."

The Praetor held her hand up. "No apology is necessary Lt. Armstrong," she said in a soft, almost melodic voice. "You said in one sentence what a thousand words could not." She then nodded to the Chief Counsel. Jason quickly turned back, and saw him return the nod to the Praetor.

"This case of the Romulan Star Empire against Lt Charles Tucker of the Federation is dismissed. You are free to go Lt Tucker," and then everyone in the room stood and faced to the rear of the room.

The Praetor nodded to Jason, rose and was escorted out of the room. Immediately following that the Counsel left the dais and then slowly the spectators started to file out. A little confused, Jason walked over to the prosecutor.

"Excuse me. I realize what the Chief Counsel said, but do we have papers to sign or anything?"

The Prosecutor looked up and shook his head. "No, once a ruling is made that is it. I am sure the Ambassador is at this moment arranging transportation for you."

Jason smiled in relief and then stuck out his hand. "Thank you and it was a pleasure to know you and visit Romulus."

The prosecutor hesitated momentarily, then with a grim smile, shook Jason's hand and turned to leave.

Jason headed back to his table and was greeted by a big grin and bear hug from Brad and this was followed by congratulatory handshakes from Admiral Dodge and Dan, with Dan also throwing in a congratulatory hug.

Tucker, with sweat pouring down his face, stuck out his hand and thanked him profusely. "You just saved my life Lt. I can't thank you enough."

The Ambassador suddenly appeared at the table and indicated for everyone to follow him. He informed them that Transportation was ready to take them back to their quarters where they would wait while he contacted the Enterprise and arranged their return to that ship.

Back in the room everyone sat quietly, still rather stunned by the sudden turn of events and consequent end of the hearing. Suddenly Dan snickered, then chuckled and then threw his head back and roared with laughter.

"I can't believe you said to the Praetor, the man just had to pee!" and everyone in the room started laughing. Jason blushed.

"Aw come on you guys, the word just popped out, but it got Tucker his release!"

The Admiral nodded and managed to sputter out "It sure did," and the laughter continued, with Brad now rolling on the floor and holding his sides. Jason looked at them and then threw his hands up in the air. "I give up," and turned and walked out of the room.

Brad got up and ran after him. As he caught up he slapped Jason on the shoulder. "Don't take is so personal Jason. It is rather funny if you stop and think about it."

"I know, I just can't believe I said it," he said and started to laugh as they continued down the corridor to the lift. While waiting for it Jason continued, "I suppose I'm never going to live that down am I?"

"Nope," said Brad with a big grin. "You are forever going to be known as the Lt who told the ruler of Romulus the 'pee' word."

Jason shook his head. "I just don't know what made me say that."

"Had you not said that word your client would be judged guilty and be back in his cell," came a voice behind them.

Both whirled around. "Ambassador!" said Jason. "I'm sorry I didn't hear you join us."

"Obviously Lt, but I reiterate that your succinct and blunt wordage is what freed Lt Tucker. Romulans appreciate blunt honesty and previous to that you were dancing all around the subject, not saying what Lt Tucker did. Laws of nature and Mother Nature are all well and good, but they were not saying what he did. The word pee expressed it exactly and the fact you were brave enough to say it directly to the Praetor, who not only appreciates honesty but also bravery, and I might add, also has a hidden sense of humor, accomplished your objective."

"Thank you for those words, Ambassador. Also, I wasn't really aware that Romulans laughed. I thought you were all stoic and unemotional like Vulcans, so I was quite afraid after I said that word that I had offended the Praetor."

"No, not at all. No one else laughed until the Praetor did. Had she not been there everyone would have laughed and clapped immediately." The Ambassador hesitated a moment as he looked into Jason's eyes.

"I also must warn you young man," he said with a straight expression, but a twinkle in his eyes, "word of this will get around, not only on Romulus, but will soon be said in every ship in the galaxy."

Jason groaned as he nodded his head and said, "I know."

"Take it as a compliment, Lt. Do not be offended. You did what had to be done to obtain your client's freedom and when people rib you they are really doing it out of respect for the courage you showed to do what you did."

"I hadn't thought of it in that way, Ambassador. Thank you for the advice."

The Ambassador merely nodded his head. "Well, I am here to take you down to the Transportation Hub. Go on down to the basement, Level U3. There is a shuttle there and I will get the others," and he turned and walked away.

* * * *

Once everyone was in the shuttle it slowly glided out of the sub-basement and then up into the sky. The group was startled to realize the windows were not blacked out and everyone peered intently out the windows, trying to glimpse this secret world of Romulus.

"Wow, look at that," exclaimed Brad.

"It's beautiful, Ambassador. Why do you keep it secret? It should be viewed and appreciated," said Dan as he stared out the window.

"I suspected you would be one who would appreciate Romulus' beauty, Captain," said the Ambassador. "You strike me as one who loves the natural order of things."

Dan grinned. "I have a cabin I built out in the woods," and then he chuckled as he looked over at the Ambassador, "And one with plenty of trees and bushes."

The Ambassador actually laughed out loud, surprising them all. "Ah Captain - but the question is - do you use them?"

"Once in a great while, but I don't want to 'soil' the natural beauty," he responded with a laugh.

Everyone continued to enjoy the view in the few minutes they had before the shuttle reached the station high in orbit above Romulus, where they were quickly taken to a Transport Shuttle.

"We have informed the Enterprise you will be arriving shortly," said the Ambassador as he rose and moved forward to the pilot. Returning he said, "We will rendezvous with your ship in ten minutes," and then sat down.

Exactly ten minutes later the Enterprise came into view and the Ambassador immediately stood. "I wish to thank you gentlemen for your exemplary conduct. You have shown Romulans that Earth humans are not all that bad. Your counsel, especially the young Lt Armstrong, has shown strength in stating and standing up for what they believe and in being honest and straightforward in their speech. Good luck to you." He then indicated for them to move to the rear of the Transport and onto the small pad.

Once they were situated the Ambassador nodded his head, received nods from the group, and then said "Energize."

As the group materialized on the transporter pad on the Enterprise, Captain Picard, Commander Riker and Dr Beverly Crusher were present. Crusher immediately moved forward and scanned each one of them with a Medical TriCorder and then turned to the Captain.

"They are all free of any organisms or contamination, Captain, and are free to leave, but I must take Lt Tucker to Sick Bay with me. He is quite malnourished and has a few lesions that need attending to."

"Very well Doctor," said Picard, who then smiled at Admiral Dodge. "Admiral. Good to see you again. How about dinner in my quarters?"

"That sounds great Captain. I can hardly wait to sink my teeth into a good old Earth meal!"

As the two walked out Riker smiled at Tucker. "Welcome to the Enterprise, Lt. We'll see you later when the Doctor has finished. As the doctor left with Tucker, Riker, Dan, Jason and Brad walked out into the corridor and saw the Admiral and Picard slowly walking up the corridor.

Suddenly the Admiral and Picard stopped walking and Picard threw back his head and burst out into loud laughter as he turned and looked back at Jason.

"Oh no," groaned Jason, his face becoming a flaming red color, which just made Brad, Dan and Tucker burst out laughing. "The Admiral has told Captain Picard," said Jason. "I'm doomed!"

"What happened?" asked Riker, not want to be left out of something that was apparently quite funny.

"You have to hear this," said Dan and much to Jason's chagrin, told him what had transpired at the end of the trial.

Riker laughed uproariously, and then turned and slapped Jason on the shoulder. "Well done Lt. Armstrong. Pee, indeed," and he started laughing again. "Just wait until I tell Worf. He dislikes the Romulans and will get a kick out of that."

As could be expected word of Jason's vocabulary soon was the buzz of all of Enterprise. Anytime a crewman passed him or saw him anywhere, they would break out in big grins and nod their heads while saying "Hello, Lt." Jason was sure they were silently adding the word 'pee' after Lt.

When the trip was three-fourths of the way back to Earth, Jason, Brad and Tucker were in the Mess Hall when Riker walked in and headed directly to their table.

"The Captain wishes to see Jason and Brad in his Ready Room, so I suggest you dump your meal and head that way. Sorry it doesn't include you Lt Tucker, so you may stay and finish your meal if you wish."

Doing as suggested they soon were ushered into the room and found Admiral Dodge and Dan already present.

"Welcome gentlemen," said Picard and indicated for them to take a seat. "Starfleet Command has been informed of the verdict and extends their congratulations to you two," he said with a smile. Brad and Jason just smiled their thanks, as they were still too much in awe of Picard to say much when in his presence.

"Also, Starfleet, at Admiral Dodge's suggestion, has altered the course of Enterprise. We will not be returning directly to Earth, but will make a slight diversion for a twenty-four hour stopover at a planet for a little Ambassadorial visit by Admiral Dodge."

"That's okay," said Jason. "We don't mind the delay. It's kind of nice being on this ship."

"Might I ask what planet, sir," inquired Brad.

Picard, Riker and Admiral Dodge all smiled but remained silent a moment until finally Picard said, "It's Dorvan V."

"Okay," said Brad and then suddenly the light went on in the minds of Dan, Jason and Brad and they all exclaimed, Dorvan V!"

"Yes," said the Admiral. "And we have already sent word ahead to locate a certain Captain Janeway and Commander Chakotay."

"That is just great, Admiral," enthused Dan. "It will be great to see them again!"

"Unfortunately I won't be able to, other than by a hail, but I'm sure you gentlemen will pass on my regards and will enjoy your visit. I have arranged to do some formal visiting with the head of the planet and try to establish a rapport with them. I feel it's the least we can do after what happened with the Cardassians."

"Thank you Admiral," said Jason. It will be great to see Captain Janeway and Commander Chakotay. Wow, this is exciting," he said as he looked at Brad.

Two days later the Enterprise settled into orbit above Dorvan V and the Admiral beamed down to do his duties and formally establish relations with the planet. A few moments later Jason, Brad and Dan stepped onto the Transporter Pad, barely able to contain their grins.

As they materialized in the middle of a dusty street, the first thing they saw were the smiling faces of Kathryn and Chakotay, who immediately moved forward to engulf each in a warm hug.

"How great to see you gentlemen again," enthused Kathryn as she moved from one to the other. "And how is my handsome Captain" she asked of a smiling Dan.

"Still taken," he said with loud laughter as he hugged her tightly.

"Damn," laughed Kathryn as Chakotay feigned a hurt expression.

"Have any excitement lately," asked a very happy Jason, while looking at Kathryn and hoping she wouldn't mention his calling her.

"No, none at all," she said, and then added "no booms, phaser shots or fires"

"We have been blessed with peace, quiet and serenity since moving here," smiled Chakotay. "Well let's show you around this 'large' town and then we'll head to our cabin," and the group slowly strolled down the street, which consisted of about four buildings, with Kathryn and Chakotay pointing out various items of interest. Three people on the street were introduced and greeted them warmly.

Soon they were in the cabin and Dan admired not only the layout of the cabin but it's blending in with the natural beauty of the land.

For the next hour everyone caught up on the latest gossip and then it happened. Brad suddenly stood and looked at Jason a moment, and then as Jason sensed what he was going to do and started furiously waving 'no', asked Chakotay if they had any bushes nearby - that he had to take a pee. This of course set off loud laughter by Dan and puzzled expressions by Kathryn and Chakotay. Jason's face turned crimson and he buried his face in his hands.

After Brad explained the remark both Kathryn and Chakotay laughed so hard they had tears streaming down their cheeks.

At last Kathryn said, "You know, of all people to say something like that to the Praetor of Romulus, it had to be Jason. It is so typical of his natural speaking during a trial!" Kathryn looked at Jason with a knowing, secretive smile. "You do have a way of being natural in a courtroom, Jason."

"Well it worked," grumbled Jason as he glared at Brad.

"That's great Jason, however, I must tell you all right now we do have plumbing in this cabin, so don't spoil my bushes!" said Chakotay. This set off another round of laughter.

Following more talk, Kathryn and Chakotay took the group on a quick jaunt to the memorial that had been built at Chakotay's old village. The group stood silently, not only saddened by the memories of the atrocity that took place, but by the serenity and beauty the area now offered.

At this point Dan told Chakotay that Admiral Dodge was attempting to restore relations with the planet and that pleased Chakotay very much.

Once back at the cabin they were told to freshen up, as they would go into town this night for what Chakotay referred to as a 'celebration'. Upon entering town they saw a large fire burning and many people were already present. It was still an hour before sunset but a slight chill in the air was beginning to be noticed, and the group knew the fire would be appreciated later in the evening. Chairs and tables were set at various places in what appeared to be a setting for dinner. As families arrived the women kept setting large plates of food on various tables.

"Where did all these people come from?" asked an amazed Jason as people seemed to appear from nowhere.

"The entire village is here to give you a welcome," smiled Chakotay. "They will have entertainment of dancing and singing, as well as a few speeches and lots of food."

"Chakotay's people are very proud to welcome visitors and you will enjoy this night, I assure you," said Kathryn as she spread two blankets on the ground and they all sat down.

As darkness started to settle in, the Chief of the village stood and welcomed the visitors 'who grace us with their presence'. A group of small children then performed a native dance, while adults chanted in the background. Three young girls came forward and placed a ring of beads around Brad, Jason and Dan's neck, while a boy stood and proudly recited the meaning of the necklaces.

Slowly the fire died down and four men started moving the remaining embers to one side until at last the fire pit was clear. Slipping on gloves two men bent down and pushing more ashes aside hauled out a roasted and very succulent looking pig. The other two men repeated the process, right next to the pig's pit, only this time it was a small deer.

Then the Chief stood and raising his arms to the heaven's said, "Great Spirit, you have provided us with this bounty and we thank you. We share this food with our visitors this night, three friends of Kathryn and Chakotay by name of Dan, Brad and Jason, and we welcome them to our celebration. We are all very blessed to know them and thank them for honoring us with their visit." He then nodded to a man who stood over the pig and deer, and who then began chanting a blessing of thanks for the bounty of food.

Following that ceremony the carving progressed and in respect to their guests, Kathryn and Chakotay had them go around the various tables first to fill their plates, while the village people lined up behind them.

"Oh man, I've never tasted anything so good," said Jason later as he lay back and patted his stomach.

"It was excellent, Kathryn and Chakotay," said Dan. "Thank you for sharing such a night with us. I for one will never forget it."

"Yeah," added Brad. "No wonder you want to live here. Everyone is so nice. This was great!"

Chakotay beamed proudly and then in a sad voice said, "I'm just sorry my father isn't alive to share this moment with us and know I have come home."

"He knows, honey," said Kathryn as she laid her head on his shoulder. "He knows."

More entertainment followed and then several sing along songs were started. As Jason, Brad and Dan didn't know the words they just smiled and listened until at last Dan sensed the wording and joined in, much to the delight of the villagers.

At last the villagers started to move to all the remaining food and the group watched mesmerized as each villager received a share of what was left. The embers were pushed back into the fire pit and the chairs and tables folded up and carried off. Soon only Kathryn, Chakotay and the three men were left.

As they stared into the few flickering sparks that occasionally shot into the air they all remained silent within their own thoughts. Chakotay held Kathryn close and occasionally bent his head and kissed her cheek.

Finally Kathryn said it was time to go back to the cabin, as the night air was getting quite chilly. A sigh of contentment was heard from Dan lying on the ground and as Chakotay stood and helped Kathryn to her feet, Jason chuckled and said, "I have to pee!"

Kathryn got the giggles and couldn't stop laughing until she quickly added, "Oh God, so do I!" and everyone moved quickly in the direction of the cabin, with Jason and Kathryn racing for the restroom. Kathryn won and Jason entertained the group with dancing around and crossing his legs, while waiting his turn.

Shortly the console light started blinking, indicating an incoming hail. As Chakotay answered it, the visage of Admiral Dodge appeared.

"Good evening Commander. How are you?" he asked while exhibiting a large smile. Kathryn quickly moved beside Chakotay and extended her greeting. The Admiral explained his business and said that 'things were going well in that matter.' So well in fact, I have informed Captain Picard that we would not beam back to the Enterprise until sixteen hundred hours tomorrow afternoon. All three men grinned upon hearing that.

Kathryn then told of the evening's celebration and Dodge said he was sorry to have missed that and maybe sometime he could visit them. Soon he signed off and the conversation and laughter continued. The group stayed up all night, savoring these few hours with Kathryn and Chakotay, who didn't seem to mind the lost sleep at all.

Following breakfast they walked around the area surround the cabin and Jason, upon seeing the creek running behind it, took off his shoes and socks and immediately started wading. Brad, not to be outdone, did the same. Both Kathryn and Chakotay turned and looked at Dan and he grinned and said as he pulled off his tunic, "If Kathryn won't mind turning her back a moment I do believe I will do some skinny dipping!" Kathryn roared with delight, but dutifully turned her back until she heard a large splash. As he emerged he yipped, "My God this water is cold!"

Kathryn laughed. "Serves you right for making me turn my back!"

Dan laughed and Chakotay once again feigned jealousy. A few moments later Kathryn heard the console beeping in the cabin and ran inside. As she punched the incoming button she was surprised to see Captain Picard.

"Jean Luc!" she exclaimed.

"Hello Kathryn. I hope I'm not disturbing you and your guests," he said noting her heavy breathing.

"Not at all, Jean Luc," she replied. "Jason and Brad are wading in the creek out back and Dan suddenly stripped and jumped in buck naked," she said, barely able to control her laughing. "I just happened to hear the beeping and ran for the cabin."

Picard grinned and replied, "I assume Dan was discrete about it?"

"Oh yes, he had me turn my back."

"Well the reason I am hailing you is the Admiral has informed me he is finished with his business and we are on our way to pick him up. The thought occurred to me you might like to beam up to the Enterprise with the gentlemen and we could all have lunch in my quarters. I can't remember exactly if you have been on my ship before."

"I would love to and I will tell everyone!" she said with a big smile.

"It means the young men will be back on board three hours earlier than planned, but you and the Commander will still be able to visit with them for a time as they are included in the invitation."

"I will inform them of the change and I'm sure they won't mind."

"Very well. Be at the beam out spot in thirty minutes. Picard out."

After Kathryn informed the men of the change in plans they all hurriedly freshened up and everyone was at the beam out spot five minutes early.

Upon arriving on the Enterprise, Kathryn was thrilled beyond words, while Chakotay felt in awe. Picard took the Admiral to his quarters while Riker gave Kathryn and Chakotay a brief tour of the ship, and then Riker escorted them to Picard's quarters, where a sumptuous lunch was served.

Admiral Dodge was delighted to see Kathryn and Chakotay again and they spent an hour conversing about a myriad of topics, not the least of which was the change in Starfleet and Dodge's guess as to when it might be safe for their return to Earth.

"Not for awhile I'm afraid. I want to be sure we have that subversive element erased before I bring you two back," he said emphatically, to which Chakotay agreed. "But, the Admiral added, "I assure you I will bring you back!"

Later, when the time had arrived to be beam back to their cabin, it was with sadness they all said goodbye.

"Come anytime," said Kathryn as she hugged and kissed each man

As she reached Jason she smiled and said, "You were very quiet during lunch."

He grinned. "Can we just say I'm too much in awe of Captain Picard to say anything?"

"I really find that amusing, that you clam up in the presence of Captain Picard and yet tell the Praetor of Romulus your client just had to pee!"

Jason and Brad laughed and Kathryn turned to Dan. "Be sure you visit sometime."

"I think you can count on me, once the Admiral retires," said Dan. "I love the peacefulness here and look forward to a return visit."

"For a longer period of time, hopefully," said Chakotay.

"I hope so. But I also look forward to the day you will be able to return to Earth," said Dan.

Chakotay nodded. "But not until it is safe. As long as Kathryn's life is threatened, Starfleet is also threatened and that's not good for any of us, but maybe someday we can return to Earth."

"I have a lot of acreage all around my cabin," suggested Dan with a smile, "and I might be persuaded some day to sell a few acres."

Kathryn and Chakotay smiled at that and said that sounded real good when the time was right. "Well I know the Admiral is anxious to get underway, so take care all of you and thanks for coming," said Kathryn and she once again bade Jason and Brad goodbye and she and Chakotay stepped up on the Transporter pad. Moments later the Ensign at the Transporter said they were ready to transport and with the hum of the Transporter and a wave from Kathryn, they disappeared.

Once back on Dorvan V, Kathryn sighed as she leaned into Chakotay's arms. "They are the best people, sweetheart. We are blessed to have found them and count them as our friends."

Chakotay tightened his arms around Kathryn and both looked up into the sky, imagining the Enterprise, now going into Warp and away from Dorvan V.

"Do you miss Earth honey?" asked Chakotay.

Kathryn looked up at him and smiled. "You keep asking me that. One more time and I'll cold cock you," she said with a laugh. "But as I've told you many times, I would only miss it if you weren't here."

He kissed her and holding her close said, "Thank you Kathryn, for being here, for loving me and for being my wife. We'll go back someday, but only when I feel you are safe."

* * * *

When the Enterprise docked at Earth, Jason and Brad, along with the Admiral and Dan received congratulations on a job well done from the welcoming committee. Still feeling euphoric over their accomplishment, Brad and Jason decided to take the rest of the day off.

The next morning, however, they were busy at their desks, trying to catch up on a backlog of business. Jason's console beeped and upon looking up saw Dan, who merely said, "The Admiral would like to see you in his office." As Jason rose he wondered briefly at the frown on Dan's face. On his way he ran into Brad who divulged he too had been summoned.

Upon entering the office both were surprised to see not only the Admiral and Dan present, but also Lt Tucker and Admiral Gates, now the head of Security.

"Have a seat gentlemen, "said Admiral Dodge, who also had a deep frown.

After seating themselves both Jason and Brad wondered what had gone wrong. Tension was palpable in the room.

"I'm afraid I have some startling news to give you," said the Admiral after a brief moment. "It appears our Lt Tucker here really was trying to spy."

Jason's mouth dropped open and Brad's eyes widened in disbelief.

"What the hell?" muttered Jason and then he suddenly stood, his eyes blazing in anger. "You used us," he yelled at the Admiral. "You lied to us!" he said in a very loud, angry voice, "And then I lied to the Romulans. How could you do that? If this gets back to them our careers, and more importantly, the respect we gained there, is ruined!"

"Easy Jason," said Dan. "We didn't know until just a few moments ago, and I assure you the Admiral has raked Admiral Gates' ass over the coals."

Jason turned to Tucker, his eyes still blazing in fury, but before he could say anything Tucker said, "I'm sorry Lt. I'm part of the Security force on Jasper and I just thought that if maybe I could find out what was going on I could help Captain Allen in his report. And also to tell you the truth, when they caught me I was scared and thought I would be convicted and executed, so I thought it best to just not say anything. I just didn't count on a cunning lawyer to save me."

"Cunning hell," shot back Jason. "It was pure luck that I used a word that struck a chord with the Romulans. He then turned to Admiral Dodge. "Admiral you have to tell the Romulans. You have to tell them we were all duped!"

"You know as well as I that they will never believe that, Jason," he sighed. "They will just consider that another lie. In covert activities, word rarely gets out on who is the spy and although Tucker is not part of any covert department he did attempt to 'spy' on the Romulans, albeit on his own. However, in my opinion, the word observation seems to fit this scenario best.

"Tucker himself came to me a short while ago and confessed what he was attempting to do. He said his conscience bothered him and he felt sorry for us and knew the ramifications we would experience if the Romulans found out."

"But that just it, Admiral, if he hadn't told us we would all still believe he was doing what he said he was," said Dan. "Now we are all culpable."

"True, but to all of you in this room, I say quite loudly and firmly, this is highly, totally and forever Classified, do you all read me!"

"Yes sir," said Dan and Brad. Tucker and Admiral Gates also responded in the affirmative, but Jason remained silent.

"Lt Armstrong, do you understand?" thundered the Admiral in a slightly irritated tone.

Still Jason remained silent.

Brad leaned forward and placed his hand on Jason's forearm. "Jason, think of it as a lawyer."

Jason glanced at him and frowned. "Client confidentiality?"

"Exactly," replied Brad. "You know lawyers are told things they can never divulge."

Jason sighed and sat down. "I just don't like the way we were lied to, Brad."

"But even with our own clients, we know some of them lie to us. This isn't any different."

"It's a hell of a lot different. It's galaxy-wide different!"

"I know, but that's the point. It's bigger than any of us. We have to remain silent or ruin what we accomplished. Starfleet has gained trust and respect once again from the Romulans."

"If I ever see a Romulan or the Ambassador I won't be able to look them in the eyes and they will immediately sense something is wrong." Jason rose and paced around the room for a few moments and at last looked at Admiral Dodge.

"I'm sorry Admiral. I didn't mean to yell at you, especially since I now know you were lied to also." He rubbed his forehead and then nodded. "I guess it is the same as client confidentiality and he really wasn't a spy in the true sense of the word, but I still wish I had known the truth," He hesitated and then held his arms out wide, and as he dropped them to his side, said, "Yeah. I will never say anything," and then looking at Tucker, "But God help you if this ever gets out!"

Lt Charles Tucker merely nodded his head and then he and Admiral Gates left the room.

Dan rubbed his eyes. "Well, I really don't know what else to say except at the moment I feel sorry for Tucker when Gates gets him alone. Tucker just might end up being suspended and when it comes to me I would have to approve it I'm just surprised Tucker came to you about this."

"I am too, Dan," said the Admiral. "But it shows he has a good heart, though, as well as being conscientious."

"Well la-te-da," said Jason. "He just better think twice before taking a pee again while on assignment."

"Speaking of which," said Dan with a chuckle as he stood.

Yeah, me too," said Jason and everyone left the room.

Epilogue

Almost five years after Kathryn's court-martial and the discovery of the subversive element trying to take over Starfleet, Admiral Dodge and his chief Assistant Captain Dan Raymond felt they finally had removed all of the 'bad apples' and that Starfleet was once again in its renowned and respected place in the Federation.

Admiral Dodge then retired and Captain Raymond followed suit five minutes later. At that juncture in time, Dan contacted Kathryn and Chakotay and after a few preliminary arrangements, secretly brought them back to Earth, informing them that it was now as safe as it could ever be and probably about equal to some of their travails in the Delta Quadrant. Knowing he meant that it would never be 'totally safe', they returned.

Dan had built a cabin much like Chakotay's on Dorvan V and within a half mile of his own abode and presented it to them on behalf of Starfleet - for what they had done in helping Starfleet regain their prestige, as well as for their being exiled almost three years due to Kathryn's life being put in danger.

Kathryn and Chakotay were shocked beyond words at the magnitude of this gesture and were thrilled and humbled in accepting it. Dan had also built a 'safe room' for them as well as an escape tunnel, which amused Kathryn and yet satisfied both her and Chakotay. They thoroughly enjoyed this new home. – as well as their 'neighbor' - and lived the rest of their lives there. After a few more years, Kathryn also accepted a temporary Ambassadorial Position with Starfleet. Chakotay, of course, was her 'counsel' and always at her side.

Lt. Yoshimoro, who had saved Kathryn's life when he skillfully managed to removed the bomb from behind her back, was promoted to Captain three months after that incident and offered his own squad to command. He declined, saying he enjoyed working with Captain Smith. However, Captain Smith died while disarming a bomb some six months later and Captain Yoshimoro took over the squad in his memory.

Lt Jason Armstrong, soon after his visit to Romulus, was promoted to Captain and he and Brad became shining lights for Starfleet, not only for their brilliance in defending clients, but for upholding honor, truth and integrity in whatever they did. Their friendship remained strong throughout their lives, as well as remaining close friends to their two most famous clients, Kathryn and Chakotay.
